United Northwest (UNWADC)

Historical Highlights
Beginning with its incorporation in 1979, the United Northwest Area Development Corporation grew out of cooperative partnerships between the Neighborhood Planning and Development Corporation, the Riverside Civic League, the North West Civic Way Neighborhood Association, Neighborhoods Helping Neighbors, the Concerned Neighborhood Association, and the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association. Since that beginning, these communities, under the leadership of an elected Board of Directors, has devised plans unique to their neighborhood needs for a redevelopment strategy to assess demographic information and identify all available resources to begin the process of revitalization.

The population of UNWADC is 16,378 people residing in 3,360 dwellings of which 44 percent are owner-occupied. The neighborhood is surrounded by some of the city’s most prestigious facilities, such as Golden Hill Estates in the northern portion, the Children’s Museum, four public parks, and three golf courses. The Indianapolis Soccer and Sports Center and the famous Flanner House provide a variety of programs for children and elderly residents. All of these amenities make UNWADC an ideal community for home ownership and economic opportunity.

Accomplishments and activities
United Northwest Area Development Corporation accomplishes its mission through a set of core activities:

Since its inception, UNWADC has adoped a vision ofr the neighborhood, which will increase its capacity to accommodate families of varying economic and racial backgrounds, size, and lifestyles. UNWADC utilizes every resource available to facilitate increased opportunities for commercial, retail and residential development. The emphasis of these efforts is to educate the community through its involvement in the development process, to create jobs and to enhance economic stability.

Housing is a significant part of the organization’s comprehensive approach to the revitalization of the UNWA community. The restoration of existing housing stock combined with new and affordable housing has been its primary focus.
