Mapleton-Fall Creek (MFCDC)

Historical Highlights
In 1985, members of North United Methodist, Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church joined with the Mapleton Fall Creek Neighborhood Association to form Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation. MFCDC has been instrumental in stopping the cycle of urban decay that has destroyed so many fine older neighborhoods around Indianapolis.

Supported by local contributions, as well as federal, state and city funds, MFCDC owns, maintains and manages nearly 48 rental properties. It also purchases, renovates and offers for sale homes throughout the area between Fall Creek Parkway, 30th Street, and Talbott Street, and works with real estate companies to promote investment in the neighborhood.

Accomplishments and activities
Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation accomplishes its mission through a set of core activities:

• Homeownership activities
• Construction of single-family homes
• Home repair assistance
• Rental housing development
• Commercial/business development
• Community organizing

The primary goal of MFCDC is to increase the percentage of homeownership in the area, and at the same time maintain the neighborhood’s distinctively diverse population.

MFCDC helps link many prospective first time buyers with local financial institutions for mortgage loans, and depending on the property and qualifications of the buyer, often assists with low interest home repair loans or grants.

With support from the City of Indianapolis, MFCDC operates home repair programs that assist low to moderate-income home owners. MFCDC also produces affordable housing through acquisition and rehabilitation of single-families homes. In 2006, MFCDC began constructing new, more energy efficient homes on vacant lots in the Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood. These 1650 square foot homes are designed to blend with the architecture of the older homes in the neighborhood.

Working together with neighbors and residents, MFCDC is also focused on long-term economic development. In addition to restoring the beauty of the neighborhood, efforts are underway to attract and develop from within, appropriate commercial ventures to serve residents and those who pass through Mapleton-Fall Creek as a gateway to downtown Indianapolis.

Recent Commercial development activities include the renovation of Tony’s Market at 30th and Talbot Streets. The corporation is currently working with businesses to expand their operations and with two potential sites for new commercial development.
